Westminster, S.C. — The City of Westminster proudly held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk along Anderson Avenue, made possible through funding from SC Wholespire, with support from Diabetes Free SC.
The crosswalk location was strategically selected to increase pedestrian safety and walkability for students walking from West Oak Middle School to the Hall Road ball fields, the new Horton Outdoor Recreation Complex, and the Cleveland Civic Center for practice and games. The project will also enhance walkability for the surrounding neighborhood and Westminster Elementary School, providing a safer route for students and families traveling on foot.
Approximately 25 youth athletes from local 12U teams joined City officials for the ribbon cutting, celebrating the addition of a new feature that promotes safety and healthy activity in the community.
The project included collaboration from Healthy Oconee Coalition, SC Department of Transportations (SCDOT), and the South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH). SCDPH Upstate Community Engagement Manager Misty Lee, who was the primary coordinator between the City of Westminster, SC Wholespire, and Diabetes Free SC, said:
“The installation of new crosswalks along Anderson Avenue at Hall Road and Jenkins Street will significantly improve pedestrian safety by providing clearly marked crossing zones. This area sees substantial foot traffic, particularly from students heading to after-school activities. The Healthy Oconee Coalition and the South Carolina Department of Public Health are proud to have collaborated with the City of Westminster to successfully complete this vital project.”
The City of Westminster remains committed to developing infrastructure that encourages safe pedestrian travel and enhances quality of life for residents and visitors alike, and is thankful for the support of SC Wholepsire, Diabetes Free SC, SCDPH, Healthy Oconee Coalition, and SCDOT.
